Along the way they encounter sea sickness and extreme bingo on the Chilean Navimag container ship; witness amazing views of Sugar Loaf mountain, Christ the Redeemer and transvestite hookers in exotic Rio de Janeiro; survive a traumatic vineyard tour in the Argentine wine capital Mendoza with a psychopathic English-hating guide called Fabio; cross the stunning Salar de Uyuni salt lakes and desert with Bolivian brothers Jose and Julio (along with the most boring man to have travelled Africa, English divorcee Stuart); become involved in a street robbery over a woollen hat in notorious La Paz; and tackle the formidable Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, an arduous task but still preferable to performing the Birdie Songto a group of Peruvian porters at 2500 metres above sea level. Andy must also come to terms with the sad realisation that not every woman in Brazil is 19 years old, bronzed and clothed only in a dental floss bikini.
Then the highlight…Colombia. Exciting and exotic, dangerous and violent. A country of drug cartels, kidnappings, FARC guerrillas and Maria’s parents. But Andy discovers behind the stereotypes a country of the most warm and welcoming people. A country of theme parks based on coffee, ‘love’ motels, and an obsession with plastic surgery.
